Waste management support for WWT

The 55 Group has been working with the WWT for over four years, supporting the delivery of more efficient and environmentally aligned waste management across various of their sites. Our focus has been on improving service consistency, reducing administrative burden, and supporting WWT’s wider sustainability goals.

About WWT:

WWT is the charity for wetlands and wildlife. In a world full of challenges, they are on a mission to restore wetlands and unlock their carbon storing, flood busting, nature-rich and mood enhancing powers. Offering wetland experiences for people in the UK at 10 wetland sites, WWT is proving how bigger and more connected networks of wetlands can sustain wetland nature and provide a range of benefits for people.

The Challenge

WWT needed a simpler, more reliable approach to managing waste across their locations. Sourcing local contractors, obtaining quotes, and managing day-to-day issues was resource intensive.

Our Solution

The 55 Group implemented a fully managed waste solution, which included:

Since working together, we’ve helped WWT manage their waste responsibly across these sites.

Each waste stream is directed to the most appropriate and sustainable processing route*

General Waste:

Processed at Energy from Waste facilities to generate electricity and heat, diverting waste from landfill.

Recycling Waste:

Sent to specialist facilities for sorting and reprocessing into new materials such as cardboard, plastics, and metals.

Food Waste:

Treated through anaerobic digestion to create renewable energy.

Glass Waste:

Fully recycled and turned into new glass products through closed-loop recycling systems.

*Disclaimer: The descriptions of how each waste stream is processed reflect typical industry practices and are accurate to the best of our knowledge. However, The 55 Group works with multiple waste suppliers and contractors, and processes may vary depending on the provider and location.

“The 55 Group always respond effectively and efficiently, it is a pleasure to work with them.”
Lucy Smith,
Head of Sustainability, WWT
