Simpler Recycling – Is your business ready?

From 31st March 2025, workplaces across England will need to follow new, simpler recycling rules designed to make waste disposal more efficient and environmentally friendly. These regulations aim to standardise recycling across businesses and non-domestic premises, ensuring that waste is managed in a more sustainable way.

Who Needs to Comply?

These new regulations apply to all workplaces that produce waste similar to household waste, including:

  • Offices
  • Shops and retail premises
  • Hospitality venues (restaurants, cafes, hotels, pubs)
  • Schools, colleges, and universities
  • Healthcare settings (GP surgeries, hospitals, care homes)
  • Charities, places of worship, and public venues

Smaller businesses (with fewer than 10 employees) have an extended deadline until 31 March 2027 to comply, but it’s worth getting started early!

What are the new recycling rules?

Under the legislation, workplaces must separate their waste into distinct categories to ensure effective recycling.

Dry Recyclables

(must be kept separate from general waste)

  • Plastic
  • Metal
  • Paper & Card (this may need to be separated from other recyclables, depending on your waste collector)

Glass

(to be collected separately)

  • Bottles
  • Jars

Food Waste

(to be collected separately)

  • All food waste should be disposed of in dedicated food bins for composting or anaerobic digestion.

General Waste

(for non-recyclable items)

  • Any waste that cannot be recycled should go in the residual waste bin.

Garden Waste

(if applicable)

  • If your workplace generates garden waste, it must be disposed of in line with best environmental practices.
